An old carpet in Dubai leaves as a general waste removal collection rather than as a specialist disposal, and the whole job is decided by one question: is it loose or is it fixed down? Roll from one short edge, with the pile facing outward so the backing carries the tension on the outside of the roll. A pile-inward roll fights back and works itself loose. Bind the finished roll in three places, at both ends and once across the middle, with rope, packing tape or cable ties. Two bindings at the ends alone let the middle sag and drag on the floor as it is carried.

The point most people discover too late is length. A living room or bedroom carpet produces a roll four or five metres long, and that roll will not lie flat in a passenger lift car and often cannot be stood on end either, because the car ceiling is lower than the roll. If you are lifting a fitted carpet, cut it as you go into strips about a metre wide and no longer than the lift car will take on the diagonal. It is a small decision made at the right moment that removes any dependence on a service lift being available. Weight, Sand and Water

Carpet is the item people consistently underestimate, and the reason is that almost nothing that makes it heavy is visible.

Fine sand works deep into a carpet pile in Dubai and stays there, below the depth a domestic vacuum reaches. A carpet down for several years in a villa or a ground-floor apartment holds a genuine quantity of it, and that weight is spread evenly through a roll rather than concentrated where you can feel it. Add a rubber or felt backing and a full-room roll needs two people, not one.

Water is the other multiplier. A carpet lifted from under a leaking air conditioner, from a burst connection, or shortly after a wet clean holds far more water than it looks capable of holding, and it releases that water steadily while it is being carried out. That is how a lift lobby floor and a corridor wall get marked on the way to the truck. Wrap a wet roll in sheeting before it moves, and say it is wet when you book so the crew arrives ready for it.

What Leaves With the Carpet

Where a room is being stripped rather than a single rug taken away, the collection covers more than the carpet:

• The carpet itself, in rolled and bound strips.
• The underlay, which tears into pieces and fills more bags than the carpet did.
• The gripper rods, bundled with the tacks facing inward.
• The threshold bars at doorways, usually aluminium and screwed down.
• Adhesive residue and skirting-line debris scraped off the screed.
• Furniture the carpet was fitted around, if it is going too.

A single old rug is a straightforward junk removal item and travels with whatever else is going.
